The anti-landguard section of the Ghana Police Service shot and killed nine people in Akwasa Hills near Tuba in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region who were thought to be landguards.
While two other suspects are in police custody, one suspect who was also shot during the operation is seeking treatment at a hospital.
The suspects had been intimidating employees of an estate development company in Akwasa Hills for a while, according to Citi News sources.
The accused frequently terrorized the workers and occasionally hurt them.
The suspects allegedly attacked the workers once more on June 8, 2023, shooting firearms in the vicinity. The police anti-landguard team attempted to apprehend the suspects after allegedly setting up an ambush, but the suspects fired back, sparking a gunfight.
The development, according to a community source who spoke on the record under the condition of anonymity since the landguards had been harassing the neighborhood for years, is to be applauded.
The developer's property in Bortianor Hills is where the incident took place. Over a month had passed since the developer started building on the property, and the landguards had been regularly harassing the workers. Police were called to the area when the developer reported the harassment, and they began an investigation. The landguards attacked the workers as the police were setting up an ambush, at which point the police opened fire, killing nine of the landguards. Three landguards sustained injuries and were sent to the hospital.
"The landguards' operations are pretty upsetting. They frequently demand payment from developers, and some have given the landguards as much as GH50,000 or even GH100,000.
In the meantime, Serwaa Agyapong, a local whose brother was shot, has refuted claims that everyone involved was a landguard.
She claimed that her nearby brother, a steel bender by trade, had never served as a landguard.
She objected to the police team's fast removal of the dead men's bodies and their use of sand and leaves to hide the blood marks.
Madam Serwaa is requesting a thorough investigation into the incident after accusing the police of wiping away the blood streaks with water.
"Contrary to popular belief, my brother is not an armed robber. He can bend steel. According to Serwaa Agyapong, the sister of one of the victims, the police removed the victim's personal items, including a television, after they had killed him.
